Foundations of Autism (EA1036)


Length of Course: 15 hours

 

Course Description:

Students will examine the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how it affects development. They will learn that there is a correlation between challenging behaviour and communication. Students will also explore sensory challenges and the importance of a structured learning environment for ASD students (e.g., predictability, frontloading, and transition strategies). They will be introduced to basic terminology associated to ASD, such as ABA, Functional Behaviour Assessment, Positive Behaviour Plan, and the importance of evidence-based practice.

 

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Understand the social, communication, and sensory challenges of ASD
  • Demonstrate an understanding of social and communication skills for children with ASD and the form and function of visual supports
  • Recognize supports and strategies that develop effective learning, communication, and social skills.
  • Identify the characteristics of, and the importance of, predictable, appropriate routines for children with ASD and apply strategies to facilitate transitions
